Antifreeze – Windshield Washer – Antifreeze and Coolant

As the cold weather approaches, it is important to check the frost protection properties of the cooling system and windshield washer system. All types of coolant may no longer be used in cars of recent years. If it is necessary to top up, use the coolant specified for your vehicle. Mixing different types of coolant and antifreeze can have harmful consequences for the engine of your car, such as loosening oxidation layers that can cause blockages and which also does not benefit your water pump and head gasket in the long term.

Checking up to how many degrees of frost your car is protected

If you are not sure whether your car's engine is sufficiently protected against frost, you can check the antifreeze / coolant yourself. You do this using an antifreeze meter. It is very simple you remove the radiator cap (be careful when the engine is warm) and put the hose of the antifreeze meter in the liquid, you suck up liquid and look on the scale to how many degrees of frost the engine is protected. The advantage is that the antifreeze meter is already for sale for a few euros

Difference in coolant: Which (color) coolant to use?

What coolant should I put in my car? A frequently asked question, Coolant comes in all kinds of colors, especially red, green and blue. These colors indicate the type and year of manufacture of the car it is suitable for. At an auto parts store or on this page you can find out which coolant is suitable for your car using your license plate. (Change the cooling system in time). When changing the cooling system, completely drain the cooling system, fill it with water, warm up the engine until the thermostat opens, (the water drops) then drain the cooling system again. Then fill the cooling system with the correct coolant. Warm up the engine until the thermostat opens again and top up the cooling system to the correct level.

Composition Coolant:

Coolant is composed of a 50/50 mixture of water, antifreeze and additives. Since the antifreeze package consists of (approximately) 92% glycol, 5% additives and 3% water, 100% coolant consists of 51.5% water, 46% glycol and 2.5% additives. The water must meet a number of requirements to be suitable as cooling water. The acidity, hardness, and amounts of sulfates, chlorine and other undesirable substances must fall within certain limits. Antifreeze is still often used in older cars, this is a homogeneous stable product based on mono-ethylene glycol. It is formulated in accordance with the regulations of European car manufacturers. Antifreeze contains additives that provide protection against corrosion and foaming. Due to the high reserve alkalinity, the cooling system is adequately protected against rust for a very long time.
