Diatomaceous earth or celite is an organogenic sediment that consists wholly or for the most part of the skeletons of single-celled diatoms or diatoms. Other names for this type of soil are silica, kieselguhr, kieselguhr, mountain flour and infusoria earth. Sediments made up of diatom skeletons can arise in both freshwater and seawater. Diatomaceous earth is a dewatered and compacted diatomaceous sludge located above sea level and is usually formed in lakes. Diatomaceous sludge occurs in situations where dead diatoms are not broken down and therefore accumulate in the lake or sea floor. Only diatom sludge forms in the deep sea. In the case of undersaturation of silicate ions, siliceous skeletons of diatoms already dissolve in the water column after the death of the organism. This does not happen with an excess of silicate ions, which can lead to the formation of a diatomaceous sludge. Another cause of diatomaceous sludge formation can be anoxic (oxygen-less) conditions in the lower part of the water column. This is the case with lakes (or seas) with a stratified water column, i.e. different conditions prevail in the upper part of the water column (for example: oxygen-rich or a relatively high temperature) than in the lower part (for example: oxygen-poor ( or oxygen-free) or relatively colder water). Such conditions often occur in deeper water. The ‘layers’ with different water types are often separated from each other by a jump layer, but the transition can also take place gradually. If an organism passes the jump layer, there is often no way back and it dies. In such a situation, diatomaceous sludge can also develop. Diatomaceous sludge is water saturated and not compacted (compressed). Through compaction and dewatering, diatomaceous earth is created from this sludge. Through further compaction and cementation, a harder rock can be formed from diatomaceous earth, which is called diatomite. Because many diatoms are seasonal bloomers, there is a peak in diatom sludge formation during part of the year. Because often it is not only diatoms that settle, sedimentation of other material continues outside the flowering peak. As a result, diatomaceous sludge is often banded, for example a sediment consisting of light- and dark-colored layers. In such a case, each light-dark layer pair represents a year. Seasonal or annual stratification can be used to determine the length of time over which a package of diatomaceous earth has been deposited. By counting the layer sets, the minimum number of years in which this happened can be determined. In this way the minimum length of various interglacials has been determined. In this way the length of the Eemian could be estimated at 11,000 years, while for the Holsteinian about 6900 years layers were counted, so that the estimation of the length of this interglacial came to 15 to 16,000 years.
